Your next step towards work or study

Explore interests, useful adjustments and a conversation worth having.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Start with your interests and the kind of opportunity you want to explore.

Start where you are

You might be leaving school, exploring a first job, returning to study or wanting something different at work. Your next step can reflect that starting point. You do not need a complete career plan before having a useful conversation.

Think about activities you enjoy, tasks you are good at and environments that suit you. Skills can come from everyday life, community activities, education and previous work.

Describe an opportunity you want to explore

A first action could be contacting a course's accessibility team, asking about a workplace or writing down questions for an employment support conversation. These are options to explore, not requirements to follow.

  • What kind of work, course or learning interests me?
  • What would I like to learn about it before deciding?
  • What times, travel arrangements and environments might suit me?
  • What support or adjustments would help me participate?

Match the question to the right source

JobAccess provides disability employment information, including workplace adjustments and employment support. For a course, ask the education provider about access arrangements and the support it can offer.

If you have NDIS funding and want to discuss disability-related employment supports, use the NDIS employment guidance and speak with your NDIS contact. A goal or a worksheet does not by itself establish funding eligibility.

Make the next step yours

Choose one conversation or action, and decide who you want involved. Record what you found out, what remains unclear and whether you want to continue, pause or explore something else.

Families and professionals can help gather information and explain options while keeping the person's own interests and preferences at the centre. Employment and study are part of the possibilities worth discussing.
