Have your say in support decisions

Make options easier to understand and choose the help you want.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Getting support with a decision can help you express what you want.

Name the decision in front of you

Start with one clear question, such as which activity you would like to try or how you want a support visit to run. Separate that choice from other decisions so there is less to hold in mind at once.

Ask why a decision is needed and whether there is a deadline. If you want more time or information, say so or ask someone to help you communicate that.

Ask for options in a useful form

You might use words, pictures, communication technology, an interpreter or a chosen supporter. What helps can change from one decision to another.

  • Can you show or explain one option at a time?
  • What might each option mean for my day?
  • Can I visit, see a picture or ask another question?
  • Is there a different option I would like to suggest?

Choose who helps you think it through

A supporter can help gather information, explain choices and communicate your preferences. Tell them what help you want. Your wishes and rights should guide the conversation.

For families and professionals, check understanding without steering towards the answer you prefer. Leave room for uncertainty, disagreement and a change of mind. Do not assume that needing communication support means someone has no preference.

Record the choice and what comes next

Write or communicate what you chose, any questions still open and when you want to revisit it. Confirm who will follow up. If there are formal legal decision-making arrangements, seek appropriate advice about how they apply; this guide does not determine legal authority.
