Try a new place at your pace

Plan a community visit around access, comfort and your own choices.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

A good plan includes a way to adjust the day, take a break or head home.

Choose the part you want to try

A new place does not have to mean a whole day out. You might begin with a short visit, a look at the entrance or a conversation with venue staff. Choose the part that interests you and what would make the visit worthwhile.

Ask about the details you need rather than relying only on the word 'accessible'. Access is different for different people.

Ask specific questions before you go

You can ask for photos or a description of the space. Check directly with the venue because facilities and arrangements can change.

  • Is there a suitable entrance, toilet and place to sit?
  • What is the noise or lighting like, and is there a quieter space?
  • Do I need to book or arrange assistance?
  • Can I leave and return, or visit at a less busy time?

Plan the return journey too

Think through getting there, finding the entrance and getting home. If using public transport in NSW, use the official Trip Planner's accessible service options and check current facilities and travel alerts. Confirm the details relevant to your mobility aid and access needs.

Agree where to meet a driver or support person and how you will let them know if plans change. Keep the travel information you need in a format you can use.

Leave room for a different day

Decide what you would like to do if the venue is too busy, transport changes or you want to leave. A shorter visit, a break or going home can be part of your plan.

Afterwards, notice what worked and what you would change. If you are supporting someone, ask for their view and record what they actually communicate rather than assuming they enjoyed it.
